Rehab Five

When there is a fire in Southern Essex County, MA chances are that Roger Baker and Rehab Five are there as well.

Serving Massachusetts North Shore firefighters for over 35 years, Baker and Rehab Five work alongside area fire departments, providing water, sports drinks, misting fans, and many other rehabilitation strategies to allow firefighters to cool down. Using the bus Unit 52, Rehab Five can rehab firefighters with A/C or heat and is able to cook meals on scene during longer-lasting fires using Rehab Five’s Field Kitchen.

Rehab Five is a nonprofit, whose name represents Massachusetts fire district 5. Rehab Five covers those 25 communities and several others in Southern Essex County. Rehab Five is a first responder for first responders.

Services

Rehab Five is Dedicated to First Responders.

Rehab Five provides all the resources necessary to protect First Responders from the physical demands associated with Fire Fighting along with the environment hazards which can create conditions. which have an advise impact on first responders health and safely

Occupational Cancer Mitigation

Rehab Five provides a decontamination protocol of the protective gear (bunker suit) with detergent and stiff brushes to remove carcinogens.  Special “HERO” wipes are used.

9

Hydration

Water, Gatorade, and a newly developed liquid that hydrates more quickly is provided to replenish vital fluids and replace electrolytes.  Light snacks and freezer pops are available.

9

Medical Triage Area

Rehab Five creates an area where the First Responders can rest as they become fatigued. New thermal protective gear completely encapsulates the wearer preventing escape of core body heat.  This increase in body temperature can lead to serious injury and death.  In summer, EMT professionals use our shade tents, misting/fog fans, core cooler chairs, and wet cooling towels to monitor vital signs and reduce their core body temperature.  In winter warming busses and hot beverages are available.  Then they may return to duty and continue to operate safely

Meals

The ability to provide hot meals for during extended operations is vital. As emergency scenes begin to enter the 8th hour, hunger and lack of calories can cause mental and physical slippage, which can lead to injury. Emergency workers also get a physiological recharge when they receive fresh hot cooked meals. In all seasons we provide full hot meals.  Rehab Five does this with our mobile kitchen, Unit 107.

Testimonials

“I don’t even know how to describe how great they are. It’s difficult to have time to work on the rehab aspect of firefighting, and that’s where Baker and his team are important.”

Chief Paul Cotter, Beverly, MA

“Rehab Five volunteers provide an invaluable service to firefighters and first responders. In the winter they provide warm drinks, food, Gatorade/water, heated vehicles for responders to get warm, dry gloves etc. In the hot months they provide hydration, spaces to cool down, misting fans etc. All at no charge to any of the communities they respond to. Please consider a donation if you are able. Thank you Roger and crew!”

Nahant, MA Fire Department

“Our department donated gloves to Rehab Five and they hand them out on cold days. The time I ready found an appreciation for Rehab Five was 20 years ago. We had a lot of woods fires. Roger and his team walked into the woods to hand out cold beverages.”

Chief David Cody, Salem, MA

“Thank you for all you do. When I showed up in Rockport yesterday morning it was nice to see that rehab five cooler with cold water and snacks. Another thing we didn’t have to worry about all day Was cold drinking water so everyone stays hydrated.”

“At the Danversport explosion in 2006, Rehab Five was on the scene for days on end with not only water and sports drinks, but they also prepared meals for the crew.”
