Rehab Five
When Roger Baker (the founder of Rehab Five) first learned to ride a bike he spent a lot of time at his local fire station. It wasn’t long before a strong friendship developed and the firefighters sent him out to do errands. One of Roger’s favorite things was the ice cream sundae runs, filling his side newspaper baskets with the sundaes.
In 1986 things became official. A used ambulance was bought expressly to provide canteen service to his local fire departments. A few years later Rehab Five was incorporated into a 501 (c) (3) private foundation.
Rehab Five now operates five special service units and has specialized resources such as two commercial ice machines, and an agreement with a portable toilet vendor for lengthy incidents.
In the late 80s there was a fundamental shift in the protective gear Fire Fighters wore. Before that time gear was breathable
and loose, allowing for the escape of body heat. While the new gear provided more thermal protection, it completely encapsulated the wearer not allowing escape of core body heat. This creates an increase in body temperature, which can lead to serious injury and death.
Rehab Five switched from being a canteen service to including aspects of Rehab to prevent injury due to the encapsulation properties of the new gear. First Responders place their lives on the line 24 hours a day – Rehab Five’s committed volunteers support them in all seasons, in all kinds of weather, without exception. Rehab Five does it because they deserve the very best care possible.
Many of Rehab Five’s volunteers are Fire Fighters who understand the value of the service Rehab Five provides and
they volunteer when they are not themselves on official duty.
